Bandar Seri BegawanThe Information Technology and State Stores Department of the Ministry of Finance conducted a two-day Awareness Programme at its premises from February 20-21.

The event was divided into three sessions for various groups of participants. The purpose was to introduce and increase awareness among the Ministry of Finance personnel on IT infrastructure and the related services that have been implemented and currently managed by the ministry's IT Centre.

The awareness programme was jointly organised with Universal Electronic Enterprise (UEE), a local firm and the main contractor for the project to set up the IT infrastructure and the related services.

The presentation on IT infrastructure and how to use the services by UEE was preceded with a welcoming speech from the Acting Director of Information Technology and State Stores, Awg Hj Umar Ali bin Hj Abdullah.

In his speech, he said that the establishment of a secure and integrated IT Infrastructure is another important milestone in the development of IT services in the Ministry of Finance, and in line with the e-government initiatives.

He emphasised on the need for users to effectively utilise the facilities to realise the return on investment and sustainability.

The IT network infrastructure is equipped with security measures and central management functions including helpdesk and data operations.

With the IT network infrastructure in place, the users in different locations within the ministry can communicate and collaborate electronically using electronic office tools including email, multimedia messenger including text, voice and video, as well as content management facilities using Web-enabled Intranet and Extranet portals for publication of the ministry's private and public information respectively.

The event was attended by heads of departments and sections and staff members of the ministry who have access to the IT network using the parallel personal computers (PCs) assigned to them. A total of 152 users are being supplied with tablet PCs.

The overall project costs $11 million which includes five years of support services from UEE. Also services are tipped to be outsourced to external parties such as other ministries and banks who wish to co-locate in the Ministry of Finance's IT data centre.

The IT infrastructure presentation concluded with a question and answer session
