Bandar Seri Begawan - Yesterday saw the official opening ceremony for BITEX 2005, the annually held ICT Showcase and Trade Fair, at The Mall in Gadong.

Present as guest of honour to launch the exhibition was Awg Hj Ahmad Hj Abd Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office.

Also present was Mohammed Mahathir Abdullah, the Chairman of Brunei Darussalam Computer Society (PKBD), the organiser of BITEX.

"This year's BITEX theme, `Building Capacity: ICT As A Key Engine For Diversification' underlies the importance the nation has placed on ICT as a key enabler in its effort to diversify the economy," remarked Mr Mohammed Mahathir.

In another speech made by the guest of honour, he spoke on the implementation of e-Government in the country and the commitment shown to increase efficiency in providing services through ICT usage.

The guest of honour also highlighted the importance of `capacity building' - to equip oneself to derive the benefits of ICT development - in two contexts, namely `individual capacity building' and `institutional capacity building'.

Speaking on the efforts underway to increase capacity building in the private sector, especially involving local employees and executives, Awg Hj Ahmad hoped that the private sector would increase their employment of locals, and that they would continuously train and expose them to the developments of ICT.

After the launch, the guest of honour was then taken on a tour around the exhibition booths. Over 25 local ICT vendors, banks and educational institutions are taking part in BITEX 2005, showcasing their latest products and services.

Among them are the latest brands and models of computers and accessories, laptops, MP3 players, i-PODs and wireless technology.

The BITEX is open from 10am until 10pm daily and will run until April 3. A lucky draw will be held on the closing day where customers during the BITEX will stand a chance to win fantastic prizes. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
