IT Security Programme Launched

Bandar Seri Begawan - The launching of the IT Security Awareness Training Programme took place yesterday at the Civil Service Institute (IPA) in Rimba. The programme that will be held until June 11 is participated by several categories of ICT users including executive management, IT professionals and end-users.

Present as guest of honour to officially launch the seminar was Dato Paduka Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Ismail, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office.

Prior to the launching, opening remarks were given by Dr Awang Azaharaini Hj Mohd Jamil, Director of Civil Service Institute, who said that the IT Security Awareness Training programme was a starting point in the institute's effort to provide systematic courses to relevant parties that play important roles in ICT application in the government administration.

He also highlighted the importance of those in management to understand information safety and possess the knowledge of the best ways of protecting it as welI as the steps to take in case of any intrusions to information systems that have been set up.

IT professionals and end-users play their own role in protecting the safety of IT infrastructure and information, he added.

The IT Security Awareness Training programme is among the IT courses that have been planned by the institute as part of its responsibility to carry out IT training programmes to realise the vision of Egovernment, BIT Council and the Civil Service Institute.

A total of $2.5 million has been allocated in the span of five years to perform ICT training. To date, the Civil Service Institute has carried out more than 30 types of ICT training that involved more than 2,000 officers and staff from the civil service.

Starting this month, the Civil Service Institute will increase its training activities in full swing following the completion of its PMOnet infrastructure development, and the institute now has four computer laboratories complete with the latest computer technology.

It will also continue sourcing out trainings carried out through private IT training schools as a means of involving the private sector in ICT training, thus playing its role in supporting the government's efforts of strengthening the development of SMEs in the country.

The institute also plans to carry out research on the success and achievement of ICT in ministries and government departments in terms. of human resource, facilities and ICT training.

The Director of the Civil Service Institute hoped that the ministries and government departments involved in the research would give their full support and cooperation in providing the needed information.

During the launching ceremony, a seminar on IT Security Awareness was conducted for the guests by Shamsul Bahri Hj Kamis, CEO of ITPSS Pte. Ltd. This was followed by a tour of an IT Security exhibition, which marked the end of the ceremony. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
