Bandar Seri Begawan - One of the important factors for the successful development of the tourism industry can be directly related to having access to the latest information technology, said tourism chief Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamad yesterday.

He was the guest of honour during the opening yesterday of the three-day Brunei International Information Technology and Trade Expo organised by Yazid Overseas Promotion Services Company.

He urged the private sector to immerse their business strategies with up-to-date technology to meet or exceed their customers' expectations.

He said tourism is the world largest industry that can create huge employment opportunities.

This is the main reason why Brunei is placing tourism highly in its diversification programme, to create more jobs for the people, he said.

Brunei Darussalam is currently embarking on e-government projects among its civil service to facilitate and make our jobs much more efficient so that they can service the requirements of not only the population, but visitors and potential investors with more effectiveness, he said.

Even in the tourism world, we cannot escape the importance of IT, he said.

Many people now book their holidays through the Internet.

"I would urge our private sector to immerse their business strategies to incorporate usage of up-to-date technology. It is only through efficient use of technology that you can meet or exceed your customers' expectations," he said.

"Speed of response to customers' wants is the key to business success."
