Bandar Seri Begawan - Waiving of Diplomatic Visa, InfoCommunication Technology (ICT), Public Health, Energy and People-to-People Exchange agreements are scheduled to be signed by senior officials from Brunei and China during the two-day State visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao beginning Wednesday.

This was stated by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Brunei, Ms Yang Yanyi, at a briefing yesterday.

Asked to elaborate on ICT, she said that it is an ongoing project involving a Chinese company, Huawei Technology Co Ltd, which is engaged in a 3G project.

It provides cost-effective and convenient communication and service facilities to Brunei.

"I think it will also contribute to the country's effort in e-government and e-business," said the Chinese ambassador.

Bulletin learnt that the contract on the supply, delivery, installation, testing, training and commissioning of the 3G mobile system on a full turn-key basis will be signed between a Brunei Company and Huawei Technology Co Ltd.

Huawei is currently carrying out an ongoing experiment and trial system since April 2004. More equipment will be coming and it is expected that the project will be implemented towards the end of the year.

On public health, Ms Yang said that there is an agreement on this cooperation and the signing will be an action plan to implement that agreement like how we can cooperate on disease prevention, especially in the globalised world.

"Towards the end of the visit, there will a joint press statement. We have priority areas in energy, trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchange," she added.

An eight-member delegation will accompany the president during his two-day State visit to the country including the member of Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Finance and Director of Central Policy Planning Office.

Asked on the agendas, she said officials will exchange views and share information on the development of both countries, exchange views on bilateral relations and ongoing cooperation and to plan for the future and share views on regional and international issues of common interests.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, there has been a growing trend in bilateral relationship.

"The visit will be the first by President Hu Jintao, in his capacity as the President, Head of Government and Chairman of State Military Committee. Former president Jiang Zemin visited Brunei in 2000 during the APEC meeting," she said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
