Bandar Seri Begawan - Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdullah, the Permanent Secretary at the Communications Ministry said that ICT has been identified as a potentially viable growth sector in Brunei.

This, he said, is part of the governments' policy to diversify its economy from oil and gas.

He made the remarks as the guest of honour at the launching of the Criss Cyber.Net Partnership. The event took place at the Orchid Garden Hotel, yesterday.

In his speech, he said that three Telecommunications related laws have been enacted, but are yet to be enforced. They are, the New Telecommunication Order 2001, the Telecommunications Successor Company Order 2001 and the Authority for Info Communication Technology Industry (AiTi) Order 2001.

He added that an E-government will predominantly become the flagship of the nation, whereby the government will lead by example in the actual realisation of e-services and applications in the civil service. It will therefore promote the potential of the B2G aspect of e-commerce, for example the TAFIS roll-out.

He explained that the telecommunications infrastructure in the country is considered to be the best in the region, with the excellent nationwide broadband Network RAGAM-21, international connectivity via fibre optic submarine cable systems and satellites as well as the continued improvement of infrastructure to further facilitate advanced IT services in the government, schools and community centres.

He further stated that Brunei has the highest penetration, with telephone household penetration of over 95 per cent and mobile phone penetration of 40 per cent.

"Technology is fast changing and this poses huge challenges to the private sector, the suppliers and providers and the government/regulators. Approaches have to be technology neutral and not 'one technology centric' and fast changing technology has created convergence of services, for example IT content and communications," Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdullah said.

He continued that technology transfer, skill transfer, knowledge transfer and strengthened partnerships to explore regional opportunities and export software services would benefit Brunei in local-foreign partnership by local IT SMEs.

The guest of honour added that local SMEs should leverage on the opportunities of the ICT sector as a means of expanding their target market not only within the local market but reaching potential global buyers and sellers as well.

Criss Cyber.Net is the first ever Brunei-Pakistan joint venture in the field of information technology. Pakistan's largest Internet solution provider Cyber Internet Services (Private) Limited and Criss (Cyber Rapid Integrated Software Solutions) a software house are the sister companies of the Lakson Group of companies, which is the largest local business group in Pakistan with over 5,000 employees.
