Bandar Seri Begawan - Communication and Information Technology form a key chapter in Brunei's National Development Plan, said a top official yesterday.

It joins the Human Resource development and the promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises as fundamental elements in all Socio-economic planning.

To this end Brunei has embarked on a new strategic framework aimed specifically at implementing the e-government program. That seeks to improve all internal operations of the government and to greatly improve the efficiency of the services offered to the people.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development, Dato Awg Hj Abd Majid made the remark at the opening of the 8th meeting of the Permanent Committee on Geographical Information System (GIS) infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific this morning.

Dato Hj Abd Majid added if the government role is to be maintained and strengthened in the long term cost effectiveness and possible means have to be looked into whereby cost can be recovered thus the meeting is aimed to maximise the economic social and environmental benefit of geographic information. The four-day meeting is held at the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong.
