"Through the core strategy of Public Sector Drive Towards Electronic Government, the government is committed to advance the effective use IT in the civil service", said Awg Hj Omar Ali bin Hj Abdullah, the representative of Hj Mahmud bin Hj Mohd Daud, Director of ITSSD, Ministry of Finance.

He spoke at the IBM seminar "Empire Strikes Back" at Centrepoint in Gadong yesterday.

The e-Government Strategic framework entitled EG21-Government and Services Online set the e-government vision 'To be an E-Smart Government in line with the 21 Civil Service Vision," he said.

"To spearhead the tasks of realising the national IT vision, the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yand Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam has also established the Brunei Darussalam National Information Technology Council that is, BIT Council. The National IT mission has been instituted as "Negara Brunei Darussalam through its National IT Council aims to lead and facilitate the strategic development of IT.

"We are all aware that the technology moves very fast and IT industry landscape also changes equally rapid. Some of us have seen or noted the prominent roles IBM played in the IT industry in the 70's with their big and robust mainframe computers. In the early 80s', how their mass roll out IBM PCs had strategically changed the IT landscape, empowering users with desktop or end-user computing. We also recall how the IT industry is then confronted with the buzzwords of downsizing, rightsizing, network centric computing. The evolution or revolution if you prefer the latter word, continued further and compounded with the phenomenal internet technology."

The IT 2000 and Beyond Strategic framework defines three core strategic thrusts or national IT drives that is the public sector drive towards electronic government, the private sector drive towards E-business and the National drive towards paperless society, he said.

"The primary objective of this seminar today is to provide further awareness and updates on IBM full product range technology, its largest offerings and its usefulness to the various organisations and departments," said Joyce Lim, Deputy Managing Director of B.S. Syscom.

"B. S. Syscom is focusing its effort on providing IT Solutions to the local market sectors. Over the past decade, we are seeing an ever-increasing demand for IT equipment and software solutions. Information Technology is crucial to our country development and is vital to our business. Brunei Darussalam is experiencing many successes in our local industry with the advancement of Information technology in the telecommunications infrastructure, banking and finance, airlines, oil and gas industry and others," she said.
